2018 Reflections and Predictions for 2019

2019 disaster.png

I try to get this out before I play any games that might sway my predictions for the end of year top ten list, and with Resident Evil 2 coming out in literally a few hours… it’s kinda now or never.

As always, here were my predictions for last year:

Game of the Year 2018:

Praey for the Gods
Donut County
Manifold Garden
Monster Hunter: World
Super Meat Boy Forever
God of War
Rhythm Doctor

Honorable Mentions:

The Last of Us Part II
Darksiders III
Mega Man 11
Death’s Gambit
Baba Is You

My prediction lists barely ever turn out well, huh? Half of those games didn’t even come out, some were underwhelming, and a handful were actually great. If Monster Hunter had disappointed that might have been my biggest surprise of the year. For reference, here’s my actual top ten for 2019:

  1. Monster Hunter: World
  2. Tetris Effect
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII
  4. Celeste
  5. Just Shapes & Beats
  6. God of War
  7. Enter the Gungeon: Advanced Gungeons & Draguns
  8. Hitman 2
  9. CrossCode
  10. The Messenger

As always, I’m about to make some BOLD claims for what’s gonna happen over the course of this year. You’ve been warned. Expect half of these to either never exist or just be terrible.

Game of the Year 2019:

Devil May Cry V
Super Meat Boy Forever
Animal Crossing Switch
The Outer Worlds
The Last of Us: Part 2
Doom Eternal
Resident Evil 2
Judge Eyes
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Honorable Mentions:

Rhythm Doctor
Trials Rising
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Manifold Garden
Knuckle Sandwich
Anodyne 2
Yoshi’s Crafted World

I could go on. Moreso than recent years, 2019 seems staaaaacked. There’s so much (hopefully) good stuff coming out this year! Last year when I made my predictions I felt like I was really having to dig to find something that I thought could make it into a top ten. This year? There’s honestly more than I can squeeze into a list like this. Just check out that wild image and the top and you’ll almost definitely find a handful of things that you’re going to love this year.

I’m ridiculously excited to see some of the original Fallout team back in action with The Outer Worlds. Judge Eyes looks like an even cooler version of Yakuza, a series I’ve come to be constantly awed by over the past few years. And we’re finally getting a bigger and better Animal Crossing? Dreams really do come true.

Stay tuned over the course of the year and we’ll find the best of the best together. And like, maybe keep an eye on the site this week because Resident Evil 2 looks super duper good ya’ll. Byyyyeeeee.
