In the ten minutes it takes to play The Static Speaks My Name, you will:
- Eat a friend
- Clean up a mess
- Chat with someone
- Decide a fate
- Probably forget to close your fridge
The Static Speaks My Name a short, moody story about someone with an obsession. Very similar to Gone Home, you’ll walk around the house and study your surroundings to discover what a person’s home says about them. If you like environmental storytelling, you’ll want to play this.
Even though it’s short, the game has a wide range of activities, and can make you feel awful right after making you snicker. The oppressive atmosphere provides a lot of tension, so the instances of dark humor offer welcome, but uneasy, chuckles.

As the description warns, the game does contain explicit handling of suicide, so be aware of that before playing.
Developer Jesse Barksdale (@JesseBarksdale) describes his game as “dark, sad, funny, weird” and that’s an impressive range for a small game like this. There’s so much detail in every corner, though, that it’s easy to see how much effort was put into making it.
Play The Static Speaks My Name on it’s itch.io page. There’s a tease for more to come at the end (although it’s also a solid statement on human life), and as dark as the game is, I’d still love to see a series of things like it.
