I’ve only just discovered Desert Fox Software’s episodic horror series, but it didn’t take long for it to peak my interest. After finishing the first two games, I can’t wait to see what they do next.
The games don’t really feature any clear plot, and instead task you with clicking around to find items to use on other parts of the environment. It’s a point and click adventure series, but there’s always something a little darker through each new doorway. The game creates a great atmosphere with a mix of music, creepy creatures, and surprises on every screen. If the rest of the episodes turn out this well I’ll be ready to call this one of my favorite horror games in a long time. (more…)

Yes, you read that title right, and yes, it’s really cool.
Once again, it’s time for some looking back. Each year I make a prediction about what my Game of the Year list might look like as the year closes, and this last one was a doozy. Not only is it completely off base as usual, but most of the games that ended up being my favorites weren’t even on my radar. Here’s what my predictions looked like at the start of 2013:
Since 2003’s The Wind Waker, no Zelda game has given me the sense of freedom I want from the series. Twilight Princess is bogged down with boring fetch quests (literally, because you’re a dog), Skyward Sword has the worst travel system and the most boring filler of any of them, and the DS games just aren’t up to par with even the other handheld games. They’ve all had great parts, I enjoyed a lot of Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, despite having to force my way through the terribleness. But, what if, Nintendo made a new Zelda game without any of the garbage that comes with them?
Super Mario 3D World is probably, minute to minute, the most fun I had with any game in 2013. The level variety constantly keeps things interesting, and I was always more than ready to see what was coming next. The team behind the Galaxy games and Mario 3D Land is one of the most talented groups making games right now, and they never feel like they’ve gotten stale.
I’ve kept this running list going all year long, and it’s time I remove this one from the front of the site and start up one for 2014. This list will live on in this post, and I’ll keep it updated whenever I stumble onto something else I missed throughout last year. As of now (January 2, 2014), this list has around 443 games on it. That’s a lot of games for one year. Granted, the majority of them are tiny 5 minute experiments, but that’s still a ton of stuff I was able to enjoy. At some point, I plan on making a Top 50 or 100 games of 2013, sifting through this list and picking out the best of it, but I have no idea when that’ll be. For now, take a look back on just how much stuff came out last year, click on a few links, and play something new.
