You Should Try to Survive This Chamber

    chamber

Clickhole is one of my favorite new websites of 2014. It’s a new spinoff of The Onion, so it shouldn’t be surprising how consistently clever and funny it is, but if you haven’t been reading it you’ve been missing out. HippoChippies is primarily a site about video games, so you haven’t heard much about them here. That was until I found out about their incredible short story/adventure game thing, How Long Will You Survive In The Chamber?

How Long Will You Survive In The Chamber was posted back in June of this year, and I just heard about it via Kole Ross‘s mention on his and Gary Butterfield‘s Bonfireside Chat podcast (which you should also 100% check out.)

The Clickhole quiz takes you through a journey of preparation before you’re sent into The Chamber. This chamber houses terrifying creatures with names like “The Child Who Is Not A Child”, so you should carefully plan out your moves before you enter.

Like most posts on Clickhole, it’s smart, will make you laugh, and you’ll want to drag your friends to it to show them how brilliant that writing staff is. After the quiz you’ll find out how long you would survive upon entering the chamber. I lasted 30 minutes. Good luck.

Weekly Update 12/04/2014 – Far Cry, Captain Toad, Geometry Wars and Pokemans

    Yeeeaahhh…weekly.

It’s almost time for Game of the Year season, and HippoChippies will be having more awards than ever before. I’ve been planning some big things that will be happening soon, so if you like seeing the greatest achievements in the industry rewarded with heaps of praise, stick around. And, as usual, the normal posts about weird indie games and other nonsense will be popping up. So if you hate GotY stuff, there’s still content planned for you. (more…)

    Super Skeleman – Subversive Skills

    super skele1

Super Skeleman is the new hotness if you’re looking for a polished, free 2D platformer. This year has filled up fans hungry for fantastic indie platformers, and developer Ben Allen’s newest game only adds to that delicious stew.

Like most games that grok that Metroid flow, you start with a simple jump and grow onward from there. Super Skeleman stands out not only because of its great soundtrack and stylish VVVVVV-esque look, but because of the subversive platforming abilities you collect. See a ledge too high to jump up? Don’t look for a double-jump, try finding the backflip ability instead. Want to cross that pit of spikes? Try the Mario-inspired dive-jump upgrade to soar across.

    super skele2

Allen says that the game is “pretty heavily inspired by 3D Mario games”, so the fun bounciness of jumping should be expected. The game never feels too punishing, so it’s a quick game to satiate your platforming appetite. Super Skeleman’s just a nice, refreshing game that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Can’t we have more of those?

If you’re ready to dive and backflip through another great platformer in 2014, check out Super Skeleman on its Gamejolt page for free.

    feature-1024x5001

If you’re vulnerable to the Cookie Clicker disease and have an hour to kill, I’m really sorry for what I’m about to do.

Bitcoin Billionaire is FizzPow Games‘ take on the “click this thing a lot really fast” genre that sprung up a couple years ago. Except now it’s an App on your phone, it lives on your home screen now, and oops it’s midnight and I’m still tapping the screen please help. (more…)

Weekly Update 11/08/2014: Call of Duty, Finishing Bayonetta 2, and Isaac’s Return

Games still keep coming fast, and the next few weeks will continue to be just as busy with Assassin’s Creed, Dragon Age, Far Cry 4, and too much more to remember. I’ve been picking favorites out of the bunch of new releases, and still always coming back to Hearthstone and Fantasy Life. I’ve actually finished some games for once, which is a relief when you’re trying to get hands on with everything.

    FROGGY – Arcade on Fire

    froggy1

First off, I’m 99% sure FROGGY is not Frog Fractions 2.

What FROGGY is, though, is Tetregeddon Games’ intensely odd rejiggering of Frogger, with way more explosions and post-apocalyptic themes.

    FROGGY is weird.
